Serbia is a country set in the Balkan Peninsula and is believed to be the economical and industrial powerhouse of the peninsula. It is also said to have an important role for anyone who plans a strategic approach to the Balkan market.
The official language of the country is serbian language. If you speak Serbian, you can be understood by the whole region, as Serbian language was the primary one spoken in the former Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia used to consist of six countries: Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia and Macedonia and all of those languages are still mutually understandable.

The history of the Serbian language

Serbian language is the only European language which has two alphabets – Cyrillic and Latin. The Cyrillic alphabet was developed by Vuk Karadzic, a Serbian linguist, who lived in the XIX century. He created the alphabet on phonemic principles. The Latin alphabet was designed by Croatian linguist Ljudevit Gaj in 1830. Both alphabets are used in Serbia today with the prevalence of the Cyrillic alphabet.
